What we provide
Our membership represents a very broad spectrum of shipowners, charterers and operators with varying operational profiles in terms of where and how and what type of ships they operate.
We insure container ships, tankers, bulk carriers, passenger ships, general cargo ships and specialist craft and our Members range from state owned fleets and large corporations to small private companies.
Our diverse membership ensures an essential spread of risk and reduces excessive exposure to any particular sector of the industry.
What we provide:
Shipowners P&I cover
Our core business is third party liability insurance for shipowners, charterers and operators in respect of the operation of their ships.
The main areas of cover are for liabilities, costs and expenses incurred in respect of:
- injury, illness or death of seafarers, passengers and others
- loss of or damage to cargo
- wreck removal
- damage to fixed and floating objects
- fines and civil penalties
We also provide cover for legal costs and other expenses incurred in handling claims under these areas of cover. Evidence of insurance for liability risks is increasingly required by government authorities in order for vessels to trade freely. We are able to provide certification or evidence of such insurance in a number of different ways in order to meet local requirements.
For charterers the Club provides core P&I cover in the same way as for shipowners, but with additional elements including charterers’ liability to compensate shipowners for loss of or damage to the chartered vessel as well as liability for loss of or damage to bunkers. Cover is normally available up to a limit of $500 million.
Defence cover for shipowners and charterers
The West of England provides Members with legal advice and insurance against legal costs of disputes in respect of ship operations even where the underlying risk may not be insured by the Club.
The Club employs a high level of in-house expertise and works closely with a wide range of maritime law firms and other specialists to ensure that high quality advice and assistance in dispute resolution is provided to Members.
