Club Correspondents Eltvedt & O’Sullivan have advised of significant shortages affecting vessels discharging bagged rice in West African ports in recent weeks. Shortages of between 3,000 and 5,000 bags have been recorded for each discharge operation. Eltvedt & O’Sullivan have reported that all such cargoes were loaded in Kakinada, India.
Members are reminded that appointing tally clerks to record the number of bags during loading and discharge operations on behalf of the vessel may help to defend any shortage claims that may arise. Vessels due to load rice in Kakinada should be particularly vigilant in this respect.
Members requiring further assistance should contact the Loss Prevention department.
