The various loss prevention activities and services of the Club are listed on the following pages.
Members may call the Loss Prevention department on matters ranging from information on commodities (eg precautions, stowage, hazards) to the latest piracy reports. Copies of IMO and maritime administration circulars are also available. Advice may be sought regarding existing and forthcoming regulatory requirements.
Various loss prevention publications and safety posters may be obtained from the Club. In addition, notices are often placed on the Club’s website or in the Newsletter when important industry publications are launched, inviting Members to contact the Loss Prevention department for a complimentary copy.
A unique feature of the Club’s loss prevention programme is the ability to offer direct on-site assistance to Members in many parts of the world if they wish to develop and/or improve their safety management systems. This service was introduced several years ago for Members requesting “hands-on” support regarding compliance with the International Safety Management (ISM) Code having followed the guidance outlined in the Club’s award winning Safety Appraisal documents. Although ISM certification is now mandatory for all ships trading internationally and their operating companies, such an exercise may present opportunities for Members to strengthen their safety management systems, thereby reducing the potential for loss.
The provision of training is yet another part of the loss prevention team’s role, and Members may request seminars tailored to their own requirements. The topics and duration of seminars are very much Member-led, and every effort is made to accommodate such requests given the importance of training as a means of minimising accidents. At the present time the Club’s own “Bridge Resource Management” and “Engineroom Resource Management” courses (held in association with Warsash Maritime Centre, Southampton) are proving to be extremely popular.
