1045 – 1115 ICS Navigational Reports
1115 – 1215 The need for Bridge Team Management
1215 – 1315 Lunch
1315 – 1400 Casualty analysis – “Kwangsi” and “British Wye”
1400 – 1430 Video – “Bridge Watchkeeping”
1430 – 1500 The bridge watchkeeper’s role
1500 – 1600 Situational awarenes and error chain detection
1600 – 1630 Basic elements of team leadership and coaching
1630 – 1730 Casualty analysis – “Exxon Valdez”*
Day 2 – Passage Planning
0900 – 0930 Video – “Passage Planning”
0930 – 1030 Voyage appraisal and passage planning
1030 – 1100 Casualty analysis “Deep Blue Sea”
1030 – 1230 Practical passage planning
1230 – 1330 Lunch
1330 – 1700 Practical passage planning (continued)
Participants will be split into small groups (2-3 as appropriate) to work at separate tables with a
chart and instruments. The passage planning exercise will be discussed with each group,
inserting relevant parts of the plan on their own chart.
Day 3 – Master/Pilot Relationship
0900 – 1000 Discussion of the Master’s and watchkeeper’s role with a pilot aboard
1000 – 1030 Video “Master/Pilot Relationship”
1030 – 1100 Human factors
1100 – 1145 Casualty analysis – “Matco Avon”*
1145 – 1150 Completion of “Feedback Form”
1150 – 1200 Course debrief and dispersal.
* Indicates that the casualty analysis will include a session where the attendees, separated into
work groups, will investigate the occurrence of lack of situational awareness and failure to
detect the development of an error chain prior to the casualty.
Nb: The timetable may be subject to change, depending on the prevailing situation. Breaks will
be programmed as appropriate.
