Turkey - Further Increase in Pollution Fines

22nd January 2019

Further to our recent News Item of 16 January 2019 regarding a significant increase in pollution fines in Turkey, correspondents Metropole Maritime have advised that the level of fines has been increased yet again by 23.73% over and above the increases already levied in December 2018.

Details of the fines now applicable after two increases in the space of a month are set out in a circular from Metropole which can be found here. Once again, the level of fines for legal entities is higher than those against persons so shipowners will be exposed to the highest levels of fine in Turkey.

Details of measures to be taken to minimise the possibility of being exposed to pollution fines when in Turkish waters can be found in our previous News Item and Members requiring further guidance should contact the Loss Prevention department.
