Turkey - Environmental Pollution Fines: Updated for 2026
Turkish authorities have announced a 25.49% increase in fines for marine pollution, effective 1 January 2026. This adjustment, as reported by local sources, applies to all categories specified under Article 23 of the Environmental Code.
- The revised tariffs apply to discharges of oil, dirty ballast, garbage, sewage, scrubber washwater, and other comparable pollutants.
- Fines are calculated based on gross tonnage, with increased rates imposed for hazardous substances, repeat violations, and corporate vessel ownership.
- Vessels may be detained until appropriate security is provided. Payment made within 30 days qualifies the vessel for a 25% reduction in the fine.
- Additional penalties are imposed for non-compliance with sulphur regulations stipulated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Members trading to or through Turkish waters are advised to review pollution-prevention procedures and ensure that crews are thoroughly familiar with compliance requirements. For detailed guidance on potential pollution sources aboard vessels, consult the provided resource.
