Safety Alert – Persian Gulf and GPS Spoofing
There has been a report in the increase of GPS spoofing in the Persian Gulf. It can be largely attributed to the heightened regional tensions, particularly following the June 2025 escalation between Iran and Israel.
Maritime authorities report that electronic interference, which include GPS jamming and spoofing, has intensified in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding areas. Therefore, Members are advised that vessels entering the Persian Gulf, especially near the Strait of Hormuz and major ports, are to be on high alert due to increased incidents of GPS spoofing.
This malicious activity can cause false positioning, course deviations, and navigational errors, posing serious safety risks. We recommend that crew members should cross-check GPS data with alternative navigation methods such as radar and visual bearings. The crew should conduct briefings and keep navigation systems up to date; this is essential to mitigate these threats and ensure a safe passage through the region.
