West fully endorses the Sailor’s Society’s initiatives to enhance seafarer training through the new Wellness Module.

We recognise the significant impact of the Sea Ready training sessions, which have prepared nearly 9,000 seafarers and cadets for life at sea over the past year. The integration of this comprehensive wellbeing toolkit into the MyWellness e-learning platform, funded by the Baltic Exchange Charitable, is a commendable step forward.

Johan Smith, Sailors' Society Head of Wellness, emphasised the importance of preparing cadets for life at sea, "Our innovative work with cadets worldwide highlights the necessity of thorough preparation. We offer essential training to ensure all seafarers, regardless of rank, feel ready before boarding their ship."

The Sea Ready course, available both in person and online, addresses the various challenges of working at sea. It provides crucial information on self-care and peer support, ensuring that seafarers arrive on their vessel with a basic toolkit to help them thrive. The training also covers how to recognise signs of deteriorating mental health in themselves and their crew mates, and where to seek support if needed.

The Wellness at Sea Awareness Campaign, refreshed and expanded, is a free resource aimed at the maritime industry to support crew, their families, and shore staff. This nine-module campaign, used by nearly 80 organisations, explores challenges faced by the entire maritime family and offers tools to navigate them. It includes updated content such as podcasts, videos, and directs users to 24/7 support services like the helpline, Crisis Response Network, and Peer-to-Peer Support Groups.

Available both online and offline, the interactive platform features quizzes, videos, and activities to help seafarers apply their learning to daily life, empowering them to make positive changes for their health and wellbeing.

West is proud to support these initiatives and encourages Members to utilise these free resources to promote health and wellbeing among seafarers. For further information, Members should contact the Loss Prevention department.
