The Neptune Bunker Information tab has been updated with the latest off-specification (offspec) fuel statistics provided by Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS).

The update incorporates recent data trends, with particular attention drawn to elevated sulphur content in Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) samples in the Amsterdam–Rotterdam–Antwerp (ARA) region.

So far in May 2026, 76.2% of analysed VLSFO samples were compliant with the statutory 0.50% sulphur limit. However, 14.3% of samples recorded sulphur content in the marginal band between 0.50% and 0.53%, while 9.5% exceeded 0.53%.

This follows a notably weaker compliance profile in April 2026, where only 40.0% of samples met specification. A significant 52.1% fell within the 0.50–0.53% range, and 7.9% exceeded 0.53% sulphur content.

While the May figures may suggest some recovery in overall compliance, the proportion of borderline and non-compliant samples remains elevated. Over the past six months, 34% of samples fell within the 0.50–0.53% range, with 6.4% exceeding 0.53%. The persistence of samples above 0.53% presents a higher compliance risk and potential enforcement exposure for vessels bunkering in the region.

The figures indicate ongoing instability in VLSFO sulphur compliance in the ARA market. These trends reinforce the need for heightened due diligence when procuring VLSFO in ARA. Operators should:

  • Scrutinise supplier quality histories where available
  • Consider pre-bunkering risk assessments
  • Maintain robust sampling and testing procedures onboard
  • Monitor marine fuel quality updates closely for emerging patterns

The Neptune Bunker Information tab continues to serve as a reference point for tracking fuel quality trends and supporting risk-based decision-making. All VPS Bunker Alerts are available on Neptune as well.
