Brazil - Immigration Fines and Filipino Seafarers

Previously the Club has published a number of news articles regarding fines levied in the case of seafarers joining or departing vessels in Brazil with a Seaman’s book issued by a country that has not ratified either ILO convention No. 108 or No. 185, or without a valid Brazilian visa in their passport.

Club correspondents Brazil P&I, Santos have advised that as of 19 January 2012, the Philippines has ratified ILO convention No. 185. Therefore Filipino seafarers may now sign on to and be repatriated from vessels in Brazil using their Seaman’s book, and no longer need to obtain a Brazilian visa.
