Lifeboat Hooks - Inadvertent Release while Off-Load

The International Group of P&I Clubs has recently provided the Association with an Investigation Report carried out by shipbuilder Hyundai into the inadvertent release of a lifeboat hook from the fall ring while a lifeboat was waterborne and the hook was off-load.

The design of the fall ring and the hook retaining device allowed the fall ring to by-pass the retaining device and work its way free while hanging loose. The shipyard concerned will be contacting those affected in due course so that modifications can be made. However, in the meantime Members are advised to check whether any of their vessels are fitted with such equipment, and if so, to consider the implementation of Hyundai’s recommended temporary precautionary measures at the earliest opportunity.

Members requiring further guidance are advised to contact the Loss Prevention Department.
