Safety Alert - Defective Fenner Hydrostatic Release Units

The Swedish Transport Agency has reported deficiencies concerning Fenner Hydrostatic Release Units.

Performance tests conducted by the Agency found that nine out of ten new units tested did not function in line with IMO specifications. Only two of the units cut the securing rope attached to the liferaft, one of which was at a depth exceeding the maximum requirement of 4 metres.

It is understood that Lloyd’s Register has been informed about the deficiencies and intends to withdraw the product’s type approval certificate. Similarly, certification has been suspended by the Polish Register of Shipping. Members operating vessels equipped with Fenner Hydrostatic Release Units are advised to replace them with alternative type approved devices as soon as possible.
