USA - Vessel General Permit - Frequently Asked Questions

In December 2013 Members were advised in Notice to Members No. 24 2013/2014 that the second issuance of the Vessel General Permit (VGP) would enter into force in the United States on 19 December 2013. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has since published a set of answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) regarding the updated VGP legislation.

The areas of the Vessel General Permit addressed by the FAQs are wide ranging and grouped into four sections:

  • Section 1 - General VGP Questions
  • Section 2 - Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs)
  • Section 3 - Sampling and Monitoring
  • Section 4 - VGP Discharge Requirements

The FAQs do not replace the provisions of the VGP. Should the VGP and/or the VGP fact sheet appear to conflict with the FAQs, the requirements of the former will prevail.

Further guidance on VGP issues can be found on the EPA National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) webpage.

Members requiring additional information should contact the Loss Prevention department.
